Work in Progress
1. No Place Like Home: Corporate and Community Outcomes of the U.S. Reshoring Movement (with Mo Shen and Huijun Wang)

Abstract: This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of reshoring, the practice of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States. Examining over 4,000 reshoring events across the entire U.S. corporate sector, we find that reshoring activities increased more than tenfold from 2010 to 2022, reaching nearly every state. Using a large language model to analyze reshoring news, we quantify time trends for the most prominent motivations, including supportive policies, innovation needs, consumer perception, sustainability goals, and logistical challenges. Upon the announcement of reshoring, publicly traded firms outperform the benchmark by 0.49% during the 3-day event window, amounting to about $180 million in gains. Difference-in-differences analysis reveals that reshoring reduces firm risk and enhances cash flow. Reshoring has a positive impact on employee earnings in the manufacturing sector at the county level, but its effect on employment is modest, with limited spillover effects on non-manufacturing sectors.
